San Francisco is one of the most photogenic cities in the world — and for dog owners, it's also remarkably pet-friendly. From windswept beaches with Golden Gate Bridge backdrops to quiet canyon trails that feel miles from the city, the options for a great session are genuinely endless.
After shooting across the Bay Area for years, these are the six locations I come back to again and again. Each one has something different to offer, so the right choice usually comes down to your dog's personality and what kind of photos you're after.
Crissy Field
For waterfront shots with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, Crissy Field is hard to beat. The restored wetlands and wide beachfront give dogs plenty of room to run, and the light — especially in the late afternoon when the sun drops toward the bridge — is spectacular. There's a warm golden quality to it that's different from anywhere else in the city.
Dogs are welcome off-leash on the beach section, and the wide open space means they tend to relax and move naturally, which almost always makes for better photos than a cramped spot would. There's usually a nice breeze off the bay that gives shots a bit of energy and life.
Baker Beach
If you want the bridge and the beach in the same frame, Baker Beach is the spot. The Golden Gate sits right above the shoreline here — close enough that it feels dramatic rather than distant — and dogs absolutely love the sand and the water. On a clear morning, the mist often lingers around the bridge towers, creating a moody, atmospheric backdrop that's hard to replicate anywhere else.
Dogs are welcome off-leash west of the parking lot. It can get windy, so it's worth checking the forecast — but honestly, a bit of wind usually adds something to the photos.
Golden Gate Park
With over 1,000 acres, Golden Gate Park offers more variety than almost anywhere else in the city. The Panhandle has gorgeous light filtering through tall eucalyptus trees in the morning. The area around Stow Lake is lush, green, and feels surprisingly quiet. The open meadows near Crossover Drive work well for dogs who like to run. You could shoot in a different part of the park every session and never repeat a background.
Dogs are welcome in most areas of the park, though leash rules vary by section. The scale of the park means it almost never feels crowded even on weekends if you pick your spot thoughtfully.
Glen Park Canyon
Glen Park doesn't make most "best of SF" lists, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about. The canyon trail winds through a stretch of land that feels genuinely wild — eucalyptus and willow trees, a small creek running along the valley floor, and steep hillsides that make the city feel very far away. It's one of the few spots in San Francisco that doesn't look like San Francisco at all.
The dappled light through the tree canopy makes for beautiful, natural-looking portraits with a softness that's hard to achieve in more open locations. Dogs with an explorer's personality tend to thrive here. The trail is usually quiet even on weekends.
The Presidio
The Presidio might be the most versatile location in San Francisco for pet photography. The forested trails, historic army buildings, sweeping views of the bay and Marin Headlands, and long stretches of off-leash areas give you something for almost every style of photo. Crissy Field is technically part of the Presidio, but the inland sections — the forests near Lover's Lane, the open meadows near Inspiration Point, the dramatic views from Battery Cranfield — offer a completely different feel.
Golden hour at the Presidio is genuinely special. The light comes through the cypress and pine trees at a low angle and turns everything warm. If you can only do one session here, late afternoon is the time to do it.
A few tips for any location
- Exercise your dog before the session — a tired dog is a calm dog, and calm dogs photograph beautifully
- Bring high-value treats they don't get every day — the novelty keeps their attention
- Schedule for golden hour (roughly an hour after sunrise or before sunset) for the warmest, most flattering light
- Let them explore for a few minutes before you start shooting — they settle down faster when they've had a chance to sniff around
